Who doesn’t like sitting back and remembering the old times? I know we do this on a regular basis and when family gets together even more so! Sweet Memories are just that, so sweet and endearing in so many ways.
Memories are filled with thoughts about where you were, who you were with, what you were doing and all the good things we shared. That included all kinds of treats and goodies that bring us back to our childhoods, when we did all kinds of crazy things.
I can remember more than one Saturday, after chores were done, going to my Best Friend’s house and then heading out to search for pop bottles. Back in my day, there was a refund on those pop bottles and we would canvas the neighborhood, finding them in the park, under the hedges, at house construction sites, and more.
When we had enough bottles, we’d go off to the corner store and scour (I really mean scour), the stores penny candy aisle. Tallying up how much we had in bottles and splitting it 50/50, and letting our eyes feast on the most beautiful, colorful and plentiful jars filled with all kinds of delights!
Mr. Aguanno (may he RIP) would take our empties, tally up what he owed us and then patiently wait for us to make our candy selections. Out came a small brown bag and we would tell him that we wanted 3 of those Black Balls, 2 of those Wax Lips, and at least 1 licorice stick or MacIntosh’s Toffee. With great delight, we would finish our “shopping” and leave his store high on the sugary sweets we had just purchased.
The best part though, is finding that you can still get some of that great candy today. Share your memories with those you love, your kids or grand kids will be thrilled with sharing some great memories with you and your sweet tooth……
After all that’s what great memories are for, to share and smile and laugh and make some more great memories.

I remember going to the local Cafe when I was five years old with ten cents and asking for a ten cent bag of mixed candies. A dime went a long way back then. Yum to the candy too!
Amazing wasn’t it….10 cents and we thought we were millionaires.
We used to stop at the corner store on the way home from school and buy penny candy. Or nickel candy if we’d saved long enough. Funny that what comes to mind is candy lips. Remember those? Thanks for sharing your sweet memories!
Oh I remember those well, and the wax bottles filled with syrup and gummy bears, marshmallow strawberries that were 2 for 1 cent…..my childhood was filled with those….
I ‘remember’ so well my penny candy store days in Williamson, NY – a little town in the Finger Lakes region. We lived in the country and the store was located at the top of a hill over a mile away. A mile was nothing to us at 7, 8, 9 years old. The fact that we could fill a little bag with candy for just pennies was the important thing. My brother & I and 3 friends who lived along our country road would walk up there regularly, usually on Saturdays after ‘allowance’ time. 🙂 Thanks for bringing back some ‘sweet’ memories!
Yes, it was incredible to have that little brown bag just teaming with sweetness and you’re right we would walk miles to get to the store and then back again munching candy all the way home…
