Read to Me, Please! Best Books for Babies

November 12, 2015 by GrammieOlivia 1 Comment

Reading is Fun.

Listen, I will tell you a story!

From the time my little ones were just months old, we made it a night time ritual to read to our children. Not only did it slow the pace before lights out, but it was comfortable and cozy and the babies loved hearing our words and seeing the pictures. Their father was an ace at making the stories come alive, with voice overs for animals, or people in the book. The children would watch, listen and learn in a relaxed, warm and non-threatening environment. They loved having our undivided attention and each story was different. Many nights it would be two or three stories before the lights went out.

Story time is a great way to end a day of play and fun. It is calming and quieting, but still fun. Story time was an every night occurance and I believe strongly that it made my children love the written word. Today, my kids are still avid readers and they are sharing their love of words with their children now.

We would spend time talking about farms, what animals liked to eat, where certain animals lived and slept too! The children were encouraged to ask questions even when they were little and didn’t quite have the right words. Their vocabulary grew along with their minds.

I can’t think of anything better to fill a child’s mind with, than stories and if you start young, they will look forward to that time of day, when they can curl up, snuggle down and hear about the antics of some imaginary person, place or thing.

Even if you are far away from your loved little ones, sending them a book in the mail or having it delivered to their house from you, is a special and memorable gift at any time!

If you visit, bring a book and make sharing the story a part of your visit. The children will remember these things long after they have grown up and treasure the time they spent with you reading.

Books for kids are still my favorite to read! From your list, I would have to pick Curious George… Oh how I enjoyed reading them to my son when he was a wee one.
