Orioles are another migratory bird that can be found in the northern US as well as southern Canada, in the summer months. They travel from South America to us in the summer months. Many people who enjoy attracting hummingbirds will also enjoy attracting Orioles as well.
Baltimore Orioles are so pretty to see with their black heads, bright orange bodies and black wings edged with white, they are one of the most colorful birds you could imagine. They also have a deep love of sweets. Their favorite food by far is grape jelly. Next to that they love oranges and then they also enjoy nectar just like the hummingbirds.
Orioles though will also eat lots and lots of insects, which is one reason you really don’t mind having them in your garden. No nasty mosquitoes will bother you if you put out your Oriole feeders and they come to nest.
Oriole feeders are much like hummingbird feeders, just that the preferred color is orange. The nectar is not quite as sweet as the hummers either, Mix sugar and water in a 1:6 ratio….One cup of sugar to 6 parts of water. Fill your feeder and remember to keep it clean. Ants will sometimes make a move on these feeders as well. Not to worry, Orioles will eat them too!
How to Attract Orioles to Your Garden
Clicking on this link you can see how beautiful these birds are and decide for yourself if you want to attract these for your family to enjoy.
I like that they are fairly easy to attract, and don’t require lots of “fancy” foods. If you provide grape jelly, nectar and oranges, you are almost guaranteed that they will come and then you can enjoy watching them.
As with other birds in the garden remember to also have a source of plain water. They love to bathe and have a sip or two of at the same time. Water will always attract birds, bees, and butterflies. Make your garden a “Nature Getaway” and have your camera ready too!

I had no idea about the oriole feeders. Thanks so much for sharing the nectar ratio!
I had no idea they drank nectar like hummingbirds. I’ll have to give it a try!
Wonderful photographs and thanks for the information on attracting the birds. I have many feeders in my yard and birdbath. Love watching the birds.
They are really beautiful birds! Sadly, they are not indigenous to our area of the US or I would definitely be putting the oranges in my backyard.
They truly are beautiful. When I get back to Canada in July, I’ll have my feeders up. I feel bad this year that we are not there for the birds in the Spring when they really need feed.
