10 Things to Do for Earth Day 2016

April 22, 2016 by GrammieOlivia 6 Comments

Celebrate Earth Day

Beautiful Earth

Today is Earth Day and many of us know that Mother Earth is hurting!  We need to help her recover to her full beauty.  As many gardeners and friends of the Earth will do today, planting something in honor of Earth Day is one small step in making a difference.  Each plant that is put into the ground or into a pot will help to remove pollution and replenish the oxygen in the atmosphere.  It would be even better to plant a tree!  Trees are incredible for cleaning the air.  So here’s a list of things to do for Earth Day this year.

10 Things that Will Make a Difference:

  • Plant a tree or two

  • Pick up litter around your own yard and maybe in a public place like a school, neighborhood park or library.

  • Turn off the computer and go outside.

  • Turn off all unnecessary lights.

  • Offer to help an elderly neighbor.

  • Go out for a walk, leave the car at home and enjoy the outdoors.

  • Fill a bird feeder or get your hummingbird feeders ready.

  • Fill a birdbath with fresh water for our feathered friends.

  • Purchase some seeds to plant like peas (they don’t mind a cool start).

  • Make a commitment to better your enviornment by joining a group or club that will teach you more ways to be Earth Friendly.

Each time you make a commitment to being aware of your surroundings, is an opportunity to make a difference too.  One little action on your part could be the start of a movement where lots of people can make a big difference.  If you learn to make a small footprint on the earth, in your own neck of the woods, it will become habit.  So that wherever you go, you will be aware and automatically look for ways to leave where you have been, untouched and in it’s natural beauty.

I think things like Earth Day are great for the reminder they give us to think about what the world around us needs. Even if it’s topping up the birdbath or turning off a light switch – every little bit helps doesn’t it?

I don’t think we’ll end up doing anything specific today, but we’ve put out our bee watering stations a couple days ago. And over the weekend i hope we’ll get our hummingbird feeders cleaned up and ready to use.

I have two, one of which is a very pretty glass one that I bought at the thrift shop. I think I’ll use that one to put out nectar for the orioles. The red one will have hummingbird nectar 🙂

Those are great things to have done and be doing. The Hummers and Orioles will be more than happy to visit your garden. And a bee watering station is great too. Congratulations, I think you did great!

All excellent ideas! The first thing that came to mind this morning when I saw that it was Earth Day on the calendar this morning was that I needed to plant a tree, but I do like some of you suggestions just as much.

Oh I love that you wanted to plant a tree! What kind of tree do you have in mind? If you are looking for dappled shade, I have a ginko tree that I just love. The trunk grows nice and straight and the branches are even spaced around the trunk, the leaves are fan shaped and really pretty. The only down side is that you want to plant a “male” tree. Crazy, but, true. The female version of this tree has seed pods that fall to the ground and smell really bad…….I got lucky when I planted mine. It was a little boy, now it’s a young man tree! lol.
